Popular online discussion platform Reddit delves into blockchain technology. Now, the company has announced the launch of NFT avatars based on its character Snoo.
However, in addition to selling avatars, Reddit also offers collectibles for free. According to the company, the most engaged users on the platform receive NFTs for free. That is, those who have earned a large amount of karma points. This is the score that represents your contributions to the Reddit communities.
NFTs will be awarded on a user-by-user basis and are not limited to specific discussion communities. Reddit NFTs – called “Avatar Collectibles” – are being minted on the Polygon network.
According to the social network team, Reddit offers free avatars in four styles: Aww Friends, Drip Squad, Meme Team, and The Singularity.
Prior to this, Reddit released a limited series of Ethereum-based CryptoSnoos NFTs. Moreover, Reddit has been exploring the blockchain space in other ways for years.
The company first launched its “Community Points” initiative with its tokens in late 2019. It then experimented with several scaling platforms that could bring token rewards to a wider audience.
Finally, Reddit has partnered with Arbitrum, an Ethereum scaling network by Offchain Labs. And this month, the initiative launched on the mainnet with its new Arbitrum Nova series, designed for social and gaming applications.
Community Points also allow them to be used in other Web 3.0 applications. Moreover, Reddit plans to introduce them to many more communities over time.
As of now, only two communities – r/CryptoCurrency and /FortNiteBR – offer crypto bonus codes, called Moons and Bricks, respectively. Reddit currently has over 50 million active users.
